Starting from an early age, Gerardo Peñalva watched with great delight as his father worked his coffee farm. In 2002 he and his wife, Fátima Maradiaga, started their own project in order to create a brighter future for their family. They planted Bourbon, Catuaí, and Icatu varietals on their farm that sat 4760 feet above sea level and, with the support of the COMSA cooperative, were able to convert to fully organic farming practices. Peñalva’s farming practices demonstrate a deep understanding of how to properly and sustainably utilize the land, ensuring it is properly nourished and avoiding the risk of damaging the soil through monocropping. Over the years, as the farm grew and produced excellent coffee, the family built a micro mill and drying patio to control every step of their coffee growing and processing before it is exported. This ensures only the most outstanding coffee leaves their farm each year. Blue State Coffee is excited to offer the washed process of Finca Las Flores for the first time this year!
